Special Education: A Guide for Parents

Welcome! Let’s Get Started.

Welcome! Let's Get Started.

I'm so glad you're here. Whether you're brand new to special education or you've been sitting at IEP tables for years, taking this course means you're investing in the single most powerful resource your child has, and that's you.

My goal is simple. I want this to be easy to use and genuinely useful, the kind of resource you can come back to whenever you need a clear answer or a next step. You won't find dense legal jargon or theory you have to wade through. Everything here is built to give you what you actually need, when you need it, so you can walk into your child's next meeting feeling prepared instead of overwhelmed.

Advocating for your child is a process, not a race. You don't need to learn it all overnight, and you don't need to have every answer before you start. Strong advocacy is built step by step, through preparation, good notes, and steady follow-through over time. We'll take it one piece at a time, and each lesson will leave you a little more confident than the last.

Here's what we'll work through together. How to prepare for meetings, how to communicate clearly with your child's team, how to make sense of the documents and data in front of you, and how to respond when the district's plan falls short of what your child needs. Practical tools you can put to work right away.

My own path into this work started the same way yours may have, as a parent whose child was struggling and who had to learn the system from the inside. Twenty-three years later, I've guided hundreds of families through it, and I built this course so you don't have to figure it out alone the way I did.

Take your time, move at your own pace, and come back to these lessons whenever you need them. You've already taken the first step, and your child is lucky to have you in their corner.

Let's get started.

Maureen Brown, M.S.
Educational Consultant and Special Education Advocate

For more than 23 years, I've sat on the family's side of the table, guiding parents through IEP meetings, placement fights, and the moments when the system feels stacked against them. I don't just know the rules. I know how to use them to get children what they need.

My work is backed by membership in the field's most respected professional organizations, the kind that require real experience and a commitment to ethical, family-centered practice:

Independent Educational Consultants Association (IECA), the national standard for vetted, professional educational consulting Special Needs Advocacy Network (SPANN), Council for Attorneys and Advocates (COPAA)

When you learn from me, you're learning from someone who does this work every day, for real families, with real results. I've built this course to hand you the same tools and strategies I use in the field, so you can walk into any meeting knowing exactly what to ask for and how to get it.

Maureen Brown is a Special Education Advocate who has spent more than two decades making sure children get the Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) the law promises them. With an undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Master's in Human Services, she sees the whole child and the whole system, and she knows how to bring agencies, schools, and service providers to the same table so your child gets the support they need to make real progress.

Much of her work is about handing that power back to families. The special education system is complicated by design, and Maureen helps parents and caregivers move through it with clarity and confidence, so they can speak up for their child and be heard. Her approach is grounded in a simple conviction. Every child deserves the chance to reach their full potential, and every family deserves an advocate in their corner who knows how to make that happen.

This course is the result of years of doing that work, distilled into the tools and strategies that actually move the needle. By the end, you'll have what you need to be the strongest possible advocate for your child.

What you’ll learn

Ask the Advocate works hard to plan for IEP meetings prior to the meeting. Preparation is key for successful meetings.

Special Education: A Guide for Parents

Parenting a child with special education needs can feel isolating and overwhelming. No one hands you a roadmap for navigating the school system, knowing who to contact, or speaking up for your child the way they deserve. That changes today. This special education course, created by Massachusetts education consultant and special education advocate Maureen Brown, walks you through the entire IEP process, step by step. You'll learn how to request a special education evaluation, how to walk into a team meeting prepared and confident, and what state and federal law actually requires of both your family and the school. You'll know exactly how to follow up so that if your child qualifies for an Individualized Education Program, they get one.

Our guides, scripts, and workbooks take the guesswork out of every form and every conversation. No more staring at paperwork wondering if you're saying the right thing. We've made the whole process clear, manageable, and far less stressful from start to finish. This course gives you the foundation to advocate for your child with real confidence. And when your situation calls for more, you don't have to figure it out alone. Maureen and her advocacy team are ready to step in and connect you with the right support so your child can thrive, in school and in life. Just click Book a Consultation at the top of the page to get started.

Your child already has someone in their corner who's willing to learn and fight for them. That someone is you, and this is where you begin.
